ReplyDelete*New Life in Aussie*
ReplyDeleteMy name is ChanChhun So. I am from Cambodia. I have been in Australia for a year. I currently is studying in year 11, Cheltenham Secondary College. When I first arrived, I felt nostalgic to leave my family and all my close friends. I missed the atmosphere when my family and my cousins gather together. Especially in Chinese New Year and Cambodia New Year. All of my cousins meet each other at my house. Unlike in Australia, time is money, even if we are Cambodian Chinese we have to celebrate every Chinese ceremony, but we are busy with their duty in the factory. In Australia, we rarely meet each other unless we have any birthday or party. Every minute I breathe, I always imagine how is my family? Even if I live in Australia land, the land of peaceful and develop, but I still miss the natural atmosphere in Phnom Penh, capital city of Cambodia. And the magnificence at the beach, the view of sunset at Angkor Wat.
My interviewee’s name is Gechly. She’s 17 year old. She came from Cambodia. Her family migrant to Australia in 2005. She currently is studying in year 11, Coomoora Secondary College. She is my classmate I knew her for about 8 months. I interviewed her last week at Springvale library. I asked her about the reason why her family migrated to Australia. The reason I interview her, because I want to know about her family situation in Cambodia and why her parent move to Australia because of their children’s education or another reason?
According to Gech’s view, her parent migrant to Australia, because of her education and also her parents suffered from civil war punishment during 1975-1979. They don’t want to fall upon a hard time, have no food to eat for 3 years 8 months 21days again. In Cambodia, Gech’s family do not live in Phnom Penh, they live in the province 300km away. Her parents sacrificed a lot to leave the country and their cousins. However, her family moved to Australia without knowing any Cambodians in Australia, and they have to face a new society too. At first, her family found it hard to adapt to Australian culture, because her parents don’t speak English. During the first year, they’re extremely economical, even see the fruit costly, her parent can’t make a decision to buy for their children until they get a job. She felt tough to move to Australia, because she can’t speak English properly and their culture is different from Cambodia as well. But now She feelings it is a right choice for her to live in Australia. She found her future. The new experiences she had in Australia are going excursion, going camping and other fun stuff such as: learning different languages and she really enjoy all of them. Gech like Australia more than her country, because she thought there is more freedom and more opportunity for her to express her opinion. The most difficulty for her as a migrant student in Australia is being different to others, other thing difficulty in speaking English and this cause her hardship to make friend with Aussie kid at school. I did ask her about the migration policy affect her, she instantly replied to me, yes as you know the new migrant who arrived in Australia have difficulty learning English and in order to become an Australian citizens. She has to know Australia law and the Australian values. For her advice she want to give to new migrant the same age as her is , they should learn English from their country, so it is easy for them when they come to Australia. They are able to communicate with the new society. For student they are able to make friends at school and talk to teacher very well. Moreover, after she finish her study, she want to be an accountant because it’s one of her goal she has been aiming when she was little and she’s good at accounting as well.
In my opinion, one thing that I get hit was the same as Gech as well. Because I can’t speak English very well and some student in my school they has been racist to us, look down at people who can’t understand English properly, perhaps they don’t understand what we feel.
Miss you havent approve my writing yet.lol
